Speakers Scam
A reader who wished to remain anonymous (due to shame) recently emailed me, complaining about being conned by salesmen selling speakers off the back of vans. We re-created the scenario below.

Hello hello!
To usher in the upcoming Chinese New Year, how would you like to own a free set of home entertainment system? My company usually sells them at $3000. Take a look at this catalogue. Can see? Selling for $3000! But now, you very lucky, we got extra sets. If I bring back to my office, the boss will makan it for himself. I rather give them to you for free. No catch lah. Just offer us some beer money can already. Did I hear you say $50? Where got enough? Recession leh, $50 not enough lah. How about $800? Negotiable lah. $600? Ok ok, you nice guy. $200 our lowest offer. Very cheap already. Don't believe me? Call my company and ask them how much they selling. But Shhhh…Don’t tell them we are here now.
This is good German stuff I tell you. You don't have money? Don't worry, we accompany you to the ATM. We only accept cash because no paper trail. We load the system into your vehicle first. This is perfectly legal one. This is my IC. You can copy down my details. Trust me. If you don't like the system, you can get a refund but not from us lah. You have to go down to the Small Claims Tribunal to do that but we will issue with a receipt that is lower than the amount you paid. So you will only get back the amount on the receipt or less. Aiyah, times are bad lah. We are also only making a living right? Gahmen always encourage entrepreneurship and creative ideas mah.
Our business has been going on for so long already still nothing happen to us right? It is LEGAL one. We even have endorsement from CASE and Police leh. They know what we are doing but they never stop us. We even appear on Crime Watch and Newspapers so many times already but so many people still buying. That means our product must be damn solid right. Also because we always change company name and our product name so you suckers, I mean buyers won’t remember what you see in the media. Actually got a lot of people got complain to Small Claims Tribunal before but we just simply don’t turn up loh. Nothing will happen to us because nobody can afford to sue us or seize our assets. This one is not scam lah. Scam is those minibond and NKF thing. Gahmen too busy handling the big issues like "how come the Singapore Flyer can stop turning" and "we are still searching for MAS Alamak."
